Opening weekend has flown by and from it comes a sparkling review from nytheatre.com:

“In this setting (a beautifully trashy set by Kathryn Lieber) it doesn’t take long to realize that beneath the dirty ply wood, many nasty family secrets lie. As these come to light, the final question becomes who will do the devouring: the gators or the people?

What’s also clear early on is that Dylan Lamb can write. From the first lines, you’re struck by the very unique way his characters talk, and how distinctive each of them are. In this talent, I don’t think comparisons to the Coen Brothers and Christopher Durang are out of place. Taking the writing even further is director Brandi Varnell’s efficient staging, and a fine cast, each of whom approaches their unique characters with an emotional truthfulness that’s rare in plays like this.”

Tickets are still available (but going rather quickly) at Smarttix.
Our IndieGoGo campaign is live as well, with marvelous (if we may say so) perks such as homemade jam and personalized hankies. We also offer tickets to see Alligator Summer, love notes, and the Alligator Summer soundtrack as gifts for… well, your gift.  We greatly appreciate every big and little bit of support; it takes a lot to put up great work and it means a lot to us that we don’t have to do it alone.

Opening night!

June 20, 2013

I declare, we are thrilled! (read: a little but terrified)

It’s probably a good time to write a heartfelt, sentimental post about the process and how we’ve grown together as humans, colleagues, and friends.

Instead, we’re going to show you this photo that has already creeped out some of our Facebook followers:

As always, grab up your tickets early! We are selling out fast and we’d hate for you, dear reader, to miss Alligator Summer, so pop over to Smarttix and reserve your spot in the attic.

Want to show your support but aren’t in NY this summer? (we don’t blame you; city summers can be… unbearable, to say the least) Help us out at IndieGoGo! We appreciate it more than we can say.

The set is going up, which means we’re REALLY in this! No turning back, kids.
Yours truly is covered in paint, your director is covered in sawdust, and everyone else is covered in sweat (New York got HOT today, right?!) so I think we’ve reached the point of no return.

Which reminds me, have you reserved your place in our audience? We are Readers’ Favorites in The New York Times this week (catch the link here) which means we’re likely to sell out most nights, so reserve your spot now! Tickets available via Smarttix.

INDIEGOGO STRIKES AGAIN!

June 3, 2013

Folks, we are nervous and excited. That disgustingly awesome blend of anxiety and joy which is synonymous with *looks around to make sure no one is eavesdropping, then whispers* FUNDRAISING.

It’s a necessary evil, this asking for financial assistance, and we know, we know, it comes with the nonprofit territory, but it’s so scary! And try (we do!) though we may to make sure we don’t come off like someone shaking a paper cup and droning, “chaaaange. chaaaange. chaaaaaange,” (it’s the ONLY South Park episode I’ve seen and I HIGHLY recommend it) sometimes it feels like that’s how our friends/followers/supporters may see it. (there MUST be an emotional support group for grassroots fundraisers like us… there’s GOT TO BE!)

But LO! What’s that? Our IndieGoGo campaign is new to the world and already THREE kind souls have given generously! Holy smokes!

We can’t express our gratitude enough (though try we will!) and we hope you, Dear Reader, will take a gander at our campaign and give a dollar… or two… or fifty (pushing it?) and maybe share our campaign with the folks you know. Bit by bit, we’ll get Alligator Summer on its feet and make you Squeaky Bike Lifers.

Check out our IndieGoGo campaign here.

“The great art will come when the great art takes root.”

May 30, 2013

Two theater companies in Washington, DC are making big changes in the way they raise and budget funds for their new play initiatives.

In this article by The Washington Post, Theater J and Woolly Mammoth Theater Company outline their plan to buck the current industry standard: a panic-inducing production schedule, and budget for a more artist-friendly method.

What it all boils down to is the simplest of simple facts:

“Look, we’re an underfunded field,” Woolly Mammoth artistic director Howard Shalwitz says of the labor-intensive theater business. “That’s just a given, and it’s not going to change any time soon.”

What’s more, the two companies have set out to change how they produce. Sick of the assembly line strategy used by many small and mid-size companies, Theater J and Woolly Mammoth have rolled out programs designed to buy their artists some time and foster real relationships with them.

New Show New Show New Show

May 20, 2013

Summer is almost here and we are so excited to announce our sweet plan to bring a little of the South to the big city.

We presented it as a staged reading during our 2013 Winter Reading Lab and now we are thrilled to announce:

Alligator Summer will be live in the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre (Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex) June 20 – July 7!

Written by Dylan Lamb, the dark-dark-darkly comic memory play centers on young Antietam Julep, a closeted prepubescent coming of age during the reptilian rapture in 1940s Louisiana. Sequestered with his family and the neighbors who have outstayed their welcome, Antietam discovers that the real blood-thirsty beasts are not the ones that lurk below. With wit, gore, sentiment, idiocy, archetypes, accents, and Gators, Alligator Summer is the guiltiest of pleasures for the refined sadist in all of us.

We will have more exciting information to share with you in the coming month, so keep an eye out! Find us on Twitter or Facebook or keep up with the goings-on here at squeakybicycleproductions.com!

Can’t wait to see you at the show!
